The furthest aircraft seen by a receiver makes an interesting number, but one unusually good observation says little about everyday coverage. dump1090-coverage records position observations and turns them into views that make the shape of reception easier to inspect over time.
Collect, then compare
Recording supports NDJSON and SQLite. The reporting tools can produce an offline HTML heatmap, bearing-sector summaries, GeoJSON, and text output. The heatmap uses SVG rather than depending on an external map-tile service, making the generated report convenient to keep or share as a static artifact.
Look beyond the single outlier
Thirty-six bearing sectors and percentile summaries give more context than a maximum-range figure alone. A weak direction may suggest an obstruction or an installation constraint; a change between recording periods may be worth investigating. Those patterns need comparable collection windows and conditions before drawing conclusions.
Use it as evidence for the next change
Record a baseline before moving an antenna or changing a receiver configuration, then collect another period afterward. The tool helps organize observations; it cannot isolate every environmental variable. The repository documents the recorder and report commands so the process can be repeated.
